Cairn E-Adventure 1.0 Questions

Q1: What is the rider weight limit?

A1: 105kg rider weight with 15kg of luggage. This meets the requirement of ISO 4210 for road/cyclocross bikes. This does not mean if rider and luggage is over this, they cannot ride or buy a Cairn bicycle. They will just need to be more considerate of the effects this will have on the bike’s lifespan and overall fatigue.

Q2: What is the bike made of?

A2: 6061-T6 aluminium heat-treated, with smooth welds, triple butted top tube, double-walled down tube, double butted seat tube, tapered head tube.

Q3: Can I fit racks and guards?

A3: Yes. We have provision for a rear rack and anything cages on the fork legs. Most full guards can be fitted.

Q4: Can I fit a front rack?

A4: Currently no. As our fork is carbon, we are not recommending the fitment of front racks. We are looking into how we can make this possible though.

Q5: Can I fit a dropper post?

A5: Yes! What kind? Our frame has provisions for a internally routed dropper post. Both cable and hydraulic can be fitted.

Q6: Can I fit a suspension, linkage or Lauf fork?

A6: We would recommend not. Our concern is that the riding that you will inevitably want to do when you have a suspension fork is not suited to the testing that has been done on our frame. This does not mean the frame will fail but it will accelerate fatigue. If you wish to do this, it will be at your own risk and would void your warranty with us.

Q7: Can I change the wheel size?

A7: Yes, you can. There is a consequence though depending on the wheel size you currently have fitted. There will be a slight speed limit difference between 700C & 27.5"/650B. As the limit is required by law this can not be changed by you to suit the wheel size and needs to be done by us or a registered FAZUA dealer. The difference is minimal between 1 & 2 mph or 2 or 3 km/h. This can be noticeable and will mean that the data provided by the system will not be 100% accurate (e.g. speed/distance).

Q8: Can I fit lights?

A8: Yes, Using the Fazua 12v Connection you can run any 12v compatible E-Bike Light. Why not check out the Exposure Fuse over on our site Here.

Q9: Can you set up my Cairn for a different speed limit?

A9: Yes, depending on your location we can set your bike up according to the law in that nation/state/county.

Q10: What bike size is best?

A10: We have partnered with SmartFit. They have gathered data through fitting and working with over 100 manufactures and 15000 bikes to create an algorithm. That algorithm takes all of this data and compares it to the data we have provided for Cairn. Using this genuine real-life experience and data means we can give you an individual sizing recommendation every time. You can find it in the Sizing & Geometry Tab on the product page.

Q11: Can I run road gearing?

A11: Yes, if the you wish to fit a double chain set and the other relevant parts to make it a more road-based bike. This can be done. (Shifters/Front Derailleur/Chainrings/Chain/Cassette)

Q12: Can I run Shimano Di2?

A12: Yes, you can run the bike as Di2.

Q13: Can I run Sram Etap or Etap AXS?

A13: Yes, of course.

Q14: Can I run the bike single speed or with an internal hub gear?

A14: Not easily. There are many ways of making a normal geared bicycle SS or IGH compatible. However, at this time we would not recommend it.

Q15: How will my Cairn bike be delivered?

A15: It will be delivered almost ready to ride. All the relevant adjustments would have been made to gears and brakes. All you will need to do is: Remove the packaging, fit the bars and front wheel, Pump up the tyres, set your saddle height, charge the battery (there will be a small amount of juice in it) and fit your pedals. View our how to guide Here.

Q16: I have chipped/scratched my bike and need a touch up paint?

A16: Currently we do not stock touch up paint for our bikes. In our personal experience car touch ups or nail varnish are cheap and easy solutions.

General E-Bike Questions

Q17: Where can I ride an E-Bike?

A17: You can ride an E-bike anywhere you can ride a normal/acoustic bicycle. Laws and regulations differ from country to country, state to state so it's worth checking with your local or national authority or landowner.

Q18: Isn’t an E-Bike cheating?

A18: No, not really, the electric part of the bicycle is only there to offer you assistance. You still have to the pedal the bike.

Q19: Do you need to tax and insure an E-Bike?

A19: This is dependent on where you live and the law there. In most countries the UK/EU/US (not all States though) E-bikes are still classed as a bicycle so do not require registration, taxing or insurance. There are exceptions though - Northern Ireland for example classes E-Bikes as Mopeds. You can find out more about purchasing an E-Bike nn NI here.

Q20: Where can I charge my E-Bike?

A20: Anywhere there is a plug basically. You can charge them at home, work or in your shed/garage. If the outlet you are using has the right wattage and you have the right adapter you should be able to charge up.

Q21: Can I ride and E-Bike in the rain?

A21: Yes. E-Bikes have similar IP ratings to that of most modern electronics (e.g. phones, cycle computers). So, it will be fine in most conditions. Submersion is not recommended by any manufacturer as far as we are aware. Check the IP rating of the system you intend to buy first.

Q22: Can I hack or modify my E-Bike?

A22: No, the manufacturers of the systems have many fail safes in the systems that recognise when a hack or modification has been done from the data output. Once it has registered this it will shut the system down. Modifications or hacking your E-Bike will void your warranty.

Q23: Don’t E-Bikes cost lots to charge?

A23: Actually not. Far less than an electric car, and a lot less than filling up your car with fuel. If you compare it to a smart phone which costs about 5p, your kettle is about 2.5p per boil and a washing machine is 30-40p on a 40° cycle. To charge an E-Bike battery will cost about 12-15p per charge. Now compare that to an electric car which can be as hefty as £7-8 per charge.

Q24: How long does it take to re-charge an E-Bike battery?

A24: Between 3 - 8 hours from empty dependent on the manufacturer.

Q25: How far can I ride on one charge/how long will the battery last?

A25: This is an almost impossible question to answer. The range of an E-Bike is dependent on many factors.

  • The rider's weight
  • Assistant levels
  • Luggage weight
  • How often you stop and start
  • The terrain - rolling hills, flat, uphill drags, mountains etc.
  • Drag from the road/track surface
  • Type of tyre, conditions you are in and pressure
  • The age of the battery
  • How well maintained the bike is
  • Average speed
  • Wind speed and direction

Taking into account these factors most bikes will achieve 20-30 miles (32-50 kms) as a minimum. With more efficiency comes more range. So, if you are a 75 kg rider on a flat route with slick tyres, the lowest assistance level, no luggage and on a nice warm summer day with no wind - you could expect 3 or 4 times this easily, if you are smart about the way you use the assistance.

Q26: How should I look after my battery?

A27: Below are some handy tips to keeping your battery at its best:

  • Keep an eye on its run time compared to when it was new, when the run time drops to below 75% of its original capacity or charging times increase significantly it’s time to consider replacing it.
  • Routinely check the battery charge status
  • Don’t leave the battery on charge longer than you need to, when it is charged remove it from the plug.
  • If the battery is going to be stored for a long period of time (maybe over the winter), make sure to charge or discharge the battery to 50% of its capacity and charge back to 50% at least every 6 months.
  • Make sure to store your battery either on or off the bicycle between 5° and 20° C. That’s 40° to 70° F.
  • If you do plan to store the battery, make sure to remove it from the bicycle and store it in a safe place, away from fire risks and water sources.

Q27: How long before I will need to replace my battery?

A27: Lifespans of batteries are measured by the amount of times it is recharged, sometimes called ‘charge cycles’. Typically, a battery will be able to go from fully charged to fully discharged hundreds if not thousands of times. This will depend on how much you are riding the bike or how many years this would be. Over time though the batteries will lose capacity, unfortunately with current batteries, this is inevitable and irreversible.

Q28: Can I buy spare batteries and what do I do with my old one?

A28: Yes, most E-Bike systems you can purchase a replacement battery for your bike. As a retailer of electric bicycles, it is our responsibility to dispose of or recycle any batteries and battery waste. Get in touch with us to arrange for your battery to be collected. Once we have received the battery it will be disposed of in the most environmentally friendly, safe and least impactful way possible.
